Marangu Village Culture

Note: This Marangu day trip is not the same as the Marangu Route Day Hike.

In Marangu you can learn about the culture of the Chagga people by visiting traditional Chagga houses with straw roofs. You can also taste traditional food made from bananas and the local brew, called Mbege. At the waterfalls you can cool off in clean, clear water.

Details

Your Marangu culture trip starts the moment you land at Kilimanjaro. Our staff will meet you and give you all the information you need about the tour before you head to Marangu Village.
The next day you’ll leave your hotel in the morning, shortly after breakfast. Marangu is about a one-hour drive from Moshi.

Itinerary

We leave at 8.30 am. A thirty-minute drive from Moshi brings us to Marangu Village, where we start a short 20-minute walk to Kinukamori Waterfall.

Kinukamori Falls: Kinukamori is in Chagga land, in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its clear water comes from natural springs in the volcanic rock of Kilimanjaro.

You can see Kinukamori from the top and from the bottom. It’s a lovely spot for a swim, or just to relax and enjoy the cool breeze off the falls. On the way you walk through pretty forest, past tall eucalyptus and many other trees.

Local coffee plantation tour: You’ll visit a locally owned and run coffee plantation and learn how the beans get from the tree to your cup. Try grinding and roasting the beans by hand, then enjoy a cup of fresh coffee as a reward for your hard work.

Chagga tunnels tour: You’ll go down into the pitch-dark tunnels where the Chagga hid when the Maasai raided from the lowlands. Your guide leads you safely through the underground maze and tells you about those days of guerrilla warfare and how people managed to survive underground for so long.

Banana beer tasting: Visit a local banana beer seller and try this strong local brew.
