Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safari: Cost, What to Expect, and How to Book

People who've tried it often say the same thing: a Serengeti hot air balloon safari lives up to the hype. You float quietly over the plains at sunrise and watch wildebeest, elephants and giraffe moving below you in the early morning light. It's a view you just can't get from a game drive.
It's also an expensive extra, so it's fair to ask: is it worth it? In this guide we explain what a Serengeti balloon safari costs, what the morning looks like from wake-up to landing, and how to fit it into your Tanzania trip with Kilisa Tours & Safaris.
What Is a Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safari?
It's a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Serengeti National Park, usually lasting 45 to 70 minutes. The pilot changes height during the flight. One moment you're skimming low over the treetops and the animals, the next you're climbing for wide views across the plains. You see the same landscape you've been driving through, but from a completely different angle.
How Much Does a Balloon Safari Cost?
Prices vary by operator, launch site and season, but here's roughly what to expect for the 2026 season:
| Package Type | Typical Price Per Person | What's Included |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Shared Balloon | $500 – $650 | Lodge transfer, ~1-hour flight, champagne toast, bush breakfast |
| Northern Serengeti / Peak Season Flights | $600 – $799 | Same as above, often at a higher price in the peak migration months |
| Private Charter Balloon | $800+ | The balloon just for your group, with personal service |
Most standard packages include the transfer from your lodge to the launch site and back, the flight itself, a glass of champagne or sparkling wine when you land, and a full bush breakfast out in the open. Your daily Serengeti National Park entry fee is usually a separate cost. If the balloon ride is part of a full safari package with us, the park fee may already be covered.

What to Expect: Your Balloon Morning
Here's how a typical balloon safari morning goes:
| Time | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 4:00 – 5:00 AM | Early wake-up and pickup from your lodge or camp |
| 5:30 – 6:15 AM | Arrive at the launch site and watch the balloon fill up as the sky gets lighter |
| Sunrise | Lift-off, after a briefing from the pilot on safety and the landing position |
| 45 – 70 minutes | Float quietly over the plains, spotting wildlife from above |
| Landing | A gentle (sometimes slightly bumpy) landing, with help from the ground crew |
| After landing | A champagne toast, then a full bush breakfast under an acacia tree |
| Late morning | Drive back to your lodge, often with a short game drive on the way |
It's usually all over by mid-morning, so you still have the afternoon for more safari, such as a regular game drive in Serengeti National Park or in the nearby Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Is a Balloon Safari Worth the Price?
That depends on what matters to you, but many travelers who've done it say yes. A balloon gives you something a vehicle can't: a sense of scale. From a thousand feet up you see how huge the Serengeti really is, with herds stretching into the distance, rivers winding across the plains, and the full size of the land you've been driving through. No one can promise wildlife sightings, from the ground or the air, but the quiet, the sunrise light and the view from above make it a highlight of the trip for a lot of people.
If your budget has room for one special extra on your Tanzania trip, this is a strong choice.
Best Time for a Balloon Safari
Balloon flights run all year, but the timing changes the scenery and your chances of seeing the Great Migration from above:
- June to October (dry season): calm winds, clear skies and good visibility. This is also peak Great Migration and Mara River crossing season in the north.
- January to March (calving season): flights mostly around Ndutu, with views of newborn wildebeest and predators on the southern plains.
- All year: launch sites in the central Serengeti run all year and usually have good wildlife viewing, wherever the migration happens to be.
If you'd like to time your flight with the Great Migration, our Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari, Calving Season Migration Safari and Mara River Crossing Safari all go well with a sunrise flight.
Who Can Fly?
- Children under 7 usually can't fly, and some operators set the minimum age at 6.
- Pregnant travelers are usually advised not to go ballooning. Check with the balloon operator.
- If you're not comfortable with heights, talk to us before booking. The sides of the basket come up to about chest height, and you'll be looking straight down during the flight.
- Standard travel insurance doesn't always cover ballooning, so check that your travel insurance includes adventure activities before you fly.

How to Fit a Balloon Safari Into Your Tanzania Trip
A balloon flight goes well with any trip that includes the Serengeti. Most operators need you to spend the night before the flight in the Serengeti, so it works best as part of a safari of several days, not as a day trip. A few popular safaris with time in the Serengeti that you can combine with a balloon flight:
- 3-Day Luxury Safari: Serengeti
- 4-Day Luxury Safari: Serengeti & Ngorongoro
- 5-Day Luxury Safari: Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire
- 4-Day Mid-Range Safari: Serengeti
- All luxury safaris

How to Book a Balloon Safari
Booking is easy when the flight is part of your wider Tanzania trip. We suggest flying on your second morning in the Serengeti or later. Flights are sometimes canceled because of the weather. It doesn't happen often, but it's easier to move the flight if you still have time left in the park. Tell us your preferred dates and where you're staying, and we'll arrange the transfer and timing for you.
Our experienced guides take care of the logistics, so all you need to do is set your alarm.
Ready to See the Serengeti From Above?
