January – February: Calving Season

On the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu plains, around half a million wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks, and the predators are watching closely. June – October: Peak Dry Season and Mara River Crossings

This is Tanzania's main safari season. It's dry, the grass is short, game viewing is very good in every park, and from July to October the herds of the Great Migration cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. Year-Round: Ngorongoro and Tarangire

The Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park are good in every month. The animals in Ngorongoro live there all year and don't migrate. Tarangire's elephant herds are biggest from June to October, but the park is worth a visit any time. These two parks are part of many of our luxury trips, whatever the season.

Tanzania's northern circuit, with the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, is the base of most luxury safaris, and for good reason. It has a huge range of wildlife, and the drives between parks are manageable. But Tanzania is much bigger than the north, and a tailor-made luxury safari can include places most visitors never see.

For most guests on their first luxury safari, the northern circuit is the right place to start. It gives you the Big Five, the Migration, the crater, and the acacia savannah most people picture when they think of an African safari, all in a compact area that's easy to get around.

Going Further: Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations

Ruaha National Park: Tanzania's largest national park, and one that few people know about. It looks completely different from the north, with old baobab trees, big rivers, and lots of lions and elephants, and hardly any other vehicles. A real off-grid luxury trip.
Selous Game Reserve: one of the largest protected areas in the world. It's known for boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking safaris and very good wild dog sightings. Combining Selous with the northern circuit gives you the south and the north of Tanzania in one trip, and a look at almost every kind of wildlife habitat in the country.
Mahale Mountains National Park: you can only get here by boat or small plane across Lake Tanganyika. It's home to one of the world's largest remaining groups of wild chimpanzees, and some groups are used to people, so you can trek to see them up close. A rare and special trip.
Gombe Stream National Park: where Jane Goodall did her famous chimpanzee research. It's a small forest park on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. For travelers who love nature, its history and science make it a very special place to visit.
Katavi National Park: remote and wild, and you'll have it almost to yourself. In the dry season, huge numbers of hippos and big buffalo herds gather on Katavi's floodplains, and you may go whole days without seeing another vehicle.
Rubondo Island National Park: a forested island in Lake Victoria, home to chimpanzees, sitatunga and a great variety of water birds. You can only get there by boat or small plane. A great extra for experienced safari travelers looking for something completely different.

Step 4: Choose the Right Luxury Accommodation

On a luxury safari in Tanzania, where you stay is more than just a bed for the night. It's a big part of the trip. The right camp, in the right place, at the right time of year, shapes your whole safari.

At the luxury level, the main choice is between tented camps and lodges. Each has its own feel:

Luxury Tented Camps

This is the classic East African safari. You stay in a large canvas tent with a proper bed, your own bathroom, a private veranda, and sometimes your own plunge pool, right in the bush with no fence between you and the animals. You fall asleep to lions calling and wake up to birdsong. You won't feel closer to the landscape anywhere else. Many luxury camps are semi-permanent and are set up each season where the wildlife is, so you're always close to the action.

Luxury Lodges

These are permanent buildings, often made of stone or timber, with more architectural style: infinity pools, spas, wine cellars and wide views. Many are destinations in their own right. Step 5: Plan Your Safari Activities Beyond the Game Drive

A luxury safari is even better with a few things to do besides the two game drives a day. Some of the moments our guests talk about most happen away from the vehicle:

Walking Safaris

Walking through the bush with an armed ranger guide changes how you see everything. Suddenly you notice the small things: insects, tracks, plants, smells. At walking pace, the Serengeti or Tarangire feels like a different place. Walking safaris are possible in several parks and are a highlight of many luxury trips.

Night Drives

Night drives aren't allowed in most of Tanzania's national parks, but private concession areas next to the parks often allow them, and the bush at night is fascinating. Aardvarks, civets, genets, porcupines, nightjars, and night-time predators on the hunt are things daytime visitors never see.

Cultural Visits

Tanzania's people and their way of life are just as interesting as its wildlife. Day Trips and Short Excursions

Sometimes the best moments on a luxury safari are the unplanned ones: a Chemka Hot Spring day trip, an afternoon in Arusha National Park, or a Lake Manyara day tour to look for the famous tree-climbing lions. We leave some room in every itinerary for these.

Step 6: Get the Safari Logistics Right

Logistics are where a good safari company shows what it can do. Every transfer, every meal and every camp change has to run smoothly, because every hour lost to delays is an hour you're not out in the bush.

Getting to Tanzania

Most international guests fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Several major airlines fly there, with connections through Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, Doha and Dubai. Transfers Between Parks

Health and Vaccinations

Visit a travel health clinic at least six weeks before you travel. Our immunization and medical kit guide lists the usual recommendations for Tanzania. A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're coming from certain countries, and malaria tablets are a good idea for most safari areas.

Less than you think. Neutral safari colors, a warm layer for cool mornings, a good camera, good binoculars and sun protection are the basics.
