Calving Season Safari: Why February Might Be Serengeti’s Best-Kept Secret
Most travelers plan their Serengeti trip around the river crossings in July. Very few plan around February, and we think they should. Calving season brings some of the best wildlife action of the year, with far fewer people than peak season.
What Calving Season Actually Is
Between late January and February, over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born on the southern Serengeti plains, many of them within a few weeks of each other. The herds gather here because after the short rains the grass is short and full of nutrients, which is just what nursing mothers need. It's one of the largest birthing events in the animal world, and it happens almost entirely on the Serengeti's southern plains and the edges of the Ngorongoro conservation area.
Why February Deserves More Attention
Predator action is at its busiest
Newborn calves draw lion, cheetah and hyena in big numbers. You see a lot of predator and prey activity in a small area over a short time. Many guides who've worked several seasons rate this period as highly as the famous river crossings for the amount of action.
The crowds aren't there
July and August bring most of the Serengeti's visitors, all chasing the river crossings. February gets only a small share of that traffic. Fewer vehicles at each sighting means better photos, more space and a much more relaxed game drive.
The landscape is green and dramatic
The short rains leave the southern plains green and dotted with wildflowers. It looks very different from the dry, dusty plains most people picture from safari photos. The skies are often dramatic too, with big clouds and warm golden light after a shower.
Rates are often lower
February falls outside the main peak season, so many lodges and camps offer better rates than in the July-to-September rush. For the wildlife you'll see, that can be very good value.
